Around 20% of young adults are so anxious that it affects their daily lifestyle. Far more experience anxiety but still manage to function in life, although many, barely.
Anxiety ranges in intensity from healthy and 'normal' to irrational and even crippling.
Anxiety really means fearful anticipation because fear and anxiety has to do with the future - imagination then is the very mechanism of the mind that induces fear, worry and anxiety.
It is a tendency of the human brain to constantly try and anticipate what is going to happen next - constantly trying to control and avoid situations can lead to constant feelings of underlying anxiety. Anxiety always limits performance and effects the brains ability to absorb information.
Those suffering from anxiety innocently believe there is "something wrong with me" when fear is a normal part of being human until it becomes crippling, excessive and irrational... anxiety can even leave one sick (literally) from worry.
Anxiety can often express its self as:
> Rashes on the skin
> Trying really hard to get out of things
> Panic weeks before upcoming events
> Not wanting to leave the house - Or even awake.
> Alarm and resistance - Constantly 'on edge.'
> Insomnia
> Panic Attacks
> Sickness
In a teenager anxiety can affect their ability to learn and participate... the fear of what others are going to think of them for getting it wrong can be enough to deter them from engaging in class.
Of significance, anxiety renders a person with a dominate 'me' focus instead of a 'we' focus. Research shows that a persons brain dominated by fear and anxiety will result in a strong tendency to be self-centered and not care about others whereas a brain dominated by self-acceptance and forgiveness is likely to result in a greater caring for themselves and others.
Perception and behavior is largely the result of ones dominate brain physiology; and brain physiology is largely influenced by ones dominate attitudes (H.J).
Anxiety can also affect a teenagers willingness to participate at school (particularly a new one) and even inhibit them from performing at their best; whether it be sports, exams or social interactions.
Consistent anxiety and fear have also been shown to lead to emotionally based forms of depression or even drug abuse because the mind will try, out of desperation, to gain a sense of freedom from its inner fears and worries.
When one doesn't care about themselves they often won't care what substances they put in themselves; self-care is the automatic consequence of a deep self-acceptance and increased self-awareness.
